A Londis "convenience" store has been opened in the vacant shop unit which was previously Thresher's off licence.

Since the closure of the store on the corner of Cock Lane and St. John's Road, and previously the newsagent in Elm Road (opposite Church Road), this is something which has been sorely missed in the village.

I was disappointed to see that one of only two letters in this month's Village Voice was from someone moaning about the store even before it had opened.

"Does this mean the resurgence of under-age drinking on the common, particularly the back common and the rubbish that goes with it, not to mention the rowdiness".
Give them a chance, J. Everson.

I thought much the same Mr Wizard. It's good to see a convenience store back in the heart of the village. In most other European countries, local convenience shops do not automatically lead to litter and drunken behaviour. Correlation doesn't always mean cause and effect. Why not blame the yobs themselves and their negligent parents, rather than someone who has brought a valuable service to the community?

The yobs on the back common aren't even from the area, or so an email from TV Police commented recently. They get drunk and camp out whilst causing a nuisance to people living close by. I say we horse whip them. Teach them a bloody good lesson and they won't come back. Too much molly-coddling leads to yobbish behaviour.

It's great to have a new village shop but if we want to keep it we must support itClap

I agree with Woodie, harsh punishment is much more likely to stop these yobs than rewarding them!
On the subject of the shop itself I think it is good news in general but, it concerns me that a low level store like Londis is the result. I feel that the sort of people who are the standard target market of a company at the level of Londis are more likely to cause bother than those who would go in the store if it was, say a Waitrose.

An organic store, or perhaps a restaurant would have been good, but at least it's not an empty shop.

Oh dear, I went into the new Londis shop this week Dick, does that make me more likely to resort to hooligan behaviour. No fear I will be in Waitrose tomorrow, that will redress the balance.

Simple point, the better quality of store, the less likely the customers are to behave in an anti-social manner! Perhaps we should compare the asbo ratio of say, Asda customers to Fortnums customers!
